Before I had this site, KOTOR 1 and 2 were among my favorite games, but I had never bothered to actually play through them properly. In my casual-ness, I found the mechanics confusing and instead used console cheats to create unstoppable characters with which I cut a bloody swath through both games. When I finally played through the first game without cheats, however, I found that I was actually more powerful at the end than I’d ever been while cheating thanks to an understanding of the mechanics. Playing through KOTOR 2 without cheats for the first time was much the same, barring a few strange difficulty spikes and poor design decisions. It’s strange to play through a game after so long and set aside nostalgia to recognize problems where before you had never really noticed them, but KOTOR 2 is an undeniably flawed game even if you install the restored content mod (and in one rare instance, because of said mod).
