Pirates! Gold is a striking example of better graphics not making the better game. Where the original 1987 release of Pirates was easily understandable (at least by the standards of the time), Gold updated the graphics in such a way that sword fights were suddenly completely incoherent. They’re prettier than the original game, yes, but it’s more or less impossible to get a feel for the necessary timing, and since your captain accumulates injuries sustained during these fights and ultimately has their pirating career shortened by them, a large part of the game has to be ignored. If you don’t, you’ll end up smashing the attack keys, only to be forced into retirement before you get anything done anyway. Eventually I gave up on the game because of this, and it’s a shame because it looks like it could be a lot of fun if the sword fights had actually remained a tolerable part of the gameplay.
