I’ve tried to get into Gunstar Heroes a few times, but it never really seemed to take. I always found that strange since all I’ve ever heard about it is that it’s wonderful and one of the best games ever made, though, so I made a concerted effort this time around and actually made it to the end (thanks in no small part to save states). While I can see why people remember it so fondly and do think that it holds up surprisingly well compared to other chaotic 2D shooters, it’s definitely not a perfect experience; the story is gibberish, the boss rush parts are more annoying than fun, the space shooter section is totally out of place, the flashy explosions prove themselves a migraine-inducing strobe light, and there’s not really any way to get a feel for the game outside of trial and error (or internet searches). It has a bunch of upsides as well, though, so my end impression was that it’s stunningly okayish.
