Gravity Rush 2: The Ark of Time – Raven’s Choice (DLC) Mini-review

I really liked Gravity Rush 2. Sure, the first game was incredibly underwhelming, but things finally turned the corner in the sequel and became fun; it had better characters, music, and mechanics, and while the story was still scattershot nonsense, it was an entertaining enough ride that I was willing to look past that. Then its free DLC came out. Gravity Rush 2: Another Story: The Ark of Time – Raven’s Choice: Electric Boogaloo—a fine example of how to name something so confusingly that no one knows exactly what to call it—is an abomination. Its story is so bad that it actually dampers my enthusiasm for the base game, and I genuinely regret bothering to play through it. All this time I’ve been criticizing the Gravity Rush games’ storytelling for not providing any answers, and while this DLC continues that trend by introducing things that are left unexplained the second they stop being convenient plot devices, the moments where the DLC actually explains things are so much worse. The gameplay doesn’t rescue things this time, either. If anything, it piles on by including an awkward stealth section and “protect this thing that’s being attacked” mission so ill-advised that anyone who’s actually played a game in the past 20 years would know better than to design it. I’m becoming more and more concerned that everyone involved in this series’ development is being kept in windowless cells between games, starved of the most basic stimulation to the point where even the dumbest stories and worst mechanics are manna to them. Bioshock Infinite: Burial at Sea Episode 2 (DLC) Review

When I find myself enjoying too many games in a row, I start to hunt down games that I hear bad things about in an attempt to strike a balance between “I love this game” reviews and those of the “I hate this worthless waste of time” variety. That’s actually how I came across Bioshock Infinite’s Burial at Sea DLC, a two-part DLC story that I would have likely ignored the existence of otherwise; not only was Episode 1 widely panned, but I heard many of the same things about Episode 2 and decided to give both episodes a try. Episode 1 was enjoyable, admittedly, but it was also undeniably flawed in how short (and ultimately meaningless) it is. Episode 2, on the other hand, switches up the gameplay to a Dishonored-esque brand of stealth, fills in many of the base game’s plot holes, and brings the Bioshock series full circle while ending on a much more fulfilling note than Infinite did. It’s as simple as this: I’ve played through the DLC for many games, but all of it pales in comparison to Burial at Sea: Episode 2. Read more →

Bioshock Infinite: Burial at Sea Episode 1 (DLC) Review

I like Bioshock Infinite’s two-part Burial at Sea DLC. I really do. That being said, Episode 1 isn’t worth 15 dollars. Not only is it hilariously short—many players will find it easy to play through in a single sitting—but it’s an incomplete story that exists just to set up Episode 2. Nothing is resolved story-wise, and asking 15 dollars for something so short and incomplete is outrageous. Price aside, however, this is a nice little DLC that plays almost identically to the base game. Read more →

Dishonored: The Brigmore Witches is the second of Dishonored‘s two story-focused DLCs, starting off where The Knife of Dunwall ended and completing the story of Daud and Delilah. Dishonored: The Knife of Dunwall (DLC) Review

Dishonored: The Knife of Dunwall is the first of two story-centric DLCs for Dishonored, both focusing on Daud, the talented hired killer who set into motion the events of the base game. As far as a timeline goes, the DLCs are concurrent with the main game, giving you the opportunity to see what Daud was up to while Corvo was terrorizing/saving the city. Read more →
